Troubling Encounters of the Worst Kind Meet Katie, a fresh-out-of-college grad who traded her 9-5 for an intense apprenticeship in publishing. She's got the job, but she's still struggling with some tough lessons in adulthood. After spending too much time on social media scrolling through cat videos and reels of old vacation pics while she doesn't sleep or eat enough, she starts to feel anxiety build up inside. She knows things are bad when her anxiety begins to manifest itself in physical ways—she wakes up with bruises on her arms after dreaming about being attacked by strangers. Katie thinks it's just nerves, but her friends and family think she should go see a doctor. The truth is, Katie has been experiencing psychological trauma—without knowing it—in the form of sleep paralysis, a condition that happens when you wake up or fall asleep and can’t move. It's very common: about 40% of people experience sleep paralysis at least once in their lives (according to Dr. Sachin Padhy, Director of the Sleep Disorders Center at the University of Pennsylvania). If you're lucky, it may take form as a simple dream that feels super-real—you're walking through an unfamiliar house and come face to face with a terrifying monster. For Katie, the encounter feels like something much more traumatic. Her PTSD leaves her sleep-deprived and terrified. Her anxiety gets so bad that she has to get over sleeping on the couch; she can't get to sleep in her own bed. Her friends think she's crazy, but her mom says she sounds like "a drug addict." Katie's worried about losing her job because of how out-of-control the whole situation has gotten. What might seem like a publicity stunt in real life is actually quite dangerous, and Katie needs help getting herself back on track—so she turns to Dr. Nathalie Chatel. Dr. Chatel carefully analyzes Katie's case before deciding she needs to start with a different approach. She takes her through a series of treatments, testing her for possible drug use and/or mental illness—and it turns out Katie doesn't have either. Physically, Katie is completely healthy. What real danger she could be in? Something else is taking place in Katie's life right now that may not be obvious to others: Luke, the man who has been trying to reach out to her for weeks. Luke, a photographer who lives in the neighborhood, is having a hard time of it himself. He's not doing well at work, and he has trouble maintaining healthy relationships with women. After a few one-night stands and brief relationships with local girls, he's beginning to become happy again—the happiest he's felt in a very long time. Katie and Luke have been sensing each other from across the street for months now. They talk on the phone during her breaks from work at that coffee shop where she used to get her daily fix of Zits comics. cfa1e77820
