One of the most recent and interesting trends in media is the rise of female-driven stories. While we're all aware that some amazing movies out there feature female protagonists, Hollywood has been catching on to this trend and taking more risks with it recently. And while "Roma" was a long awaited success, it's not alone in grasping this new opportunity; dozens of other films have followed suit with hugely successful results. A new type of woman has emerged from the background and taken over Hollywood: women who are funny, gripping, engaging, and compellingly beautiful — like Lady Bird or The Shape of Water's Octavia Spencer. These women are badass and one-of-a-kind; not perfect, but whole and flawed; not sex symbols or powerhouses, but fierce, fragile, lovable. These female protagonists can be found in the best films of recent memory: like Get Out and Lady Bird. They're also in many upcoming titles like The Favourite and Annihilation — all directed by women — that we will see over the next few years. This trend is already set to continue with outstanding films like Call Me By Your Name and A Star Is Born. It's just one more reason why I'm so excited to work with Amy Nicholson, who is both a writer and director, on her upcoming feature film on the topic of strong women in modern culture: Ladies vs. Ricky Bamba. Ladies vs. Ricky Bamba is a look at the intersection of female friendship and the world of sports fandom — and it's going to be amazing! The movie follows two best friends — Emma (Zoe Lister Jones) and Lucy (Natalie Morales) — as they recount the story of their time together at university (and later, when Lucy went professional). It's split into two time periods: the first deals with their time at university where they met, bonded, and became friends. The second deals with Lucy competing professionally as a basketball player. The film is kind of like Big Little Lies meets Hoosiers — about women who are forced to come to terms with the world around them after finding themselves in over their heads. It's also an honest look at the power of sports fandom, and how that can transform people into something they aren't. And most importantly, it's an honest portrayal of female friendship that makes you laugh and cry. The movie has come a long way since it was initially announced in late June 2018. It's now slated to go into production this fall, and I'm excited about the project. A new trailer debuted in July, and Amy first started teasing the first images of Emma and Lucy on Instagram. And she first announced her intention to make this movie back in May 2016 with a tweet that went viral. She followed that up with an interview with me on the subject of strong female characters (because, let's be honest here, why are there so few??), where I talked about how needed films like Ladies vs. Ricky Bamba are right now in Hollywood. The movie has also received wonderful press so far. cfa1e77820
